America

What is American?

American is the smell of saltwater in your boots as you jump ashore and anchor your ship with a rope older than your grandfather, and you sink into the black sand as you tug.

American is the smell of gunpowder at dawn when wills collide, and all you can do is watch freedom collide with the red will of anger and pray freedom wins every time.
American is the smell of cooking oatcakes on a trail head at dusk, when the fireflies buzz and blink in time to the cycle of stars above the mountains.
American is the warm sun on the back of a blanket wrapped around your shoulders as snow fills your toes and the men shout to keep moving or you'll be left behind, behind, behind in the swirling Appalachians.
American is snow in July, summer heat beating down like a frying pan and you bend and dip like a flower to reach on the ground so the snow doesn't melt on its stalks.
American is a melting pot such of flavors louder than the world has ever seen, and thick gumbo that makes you want to dance and sing all at the same time.
American is sand in between your toes like dirt gets in your knees, like rocks get on your hands, like water gets in your hair.
American is tall as a redwood and wide as the Missouri, as dry as adobe and wet as ice, as warm as the beach and as cold as twelve feet of snow.
American is the sound of a car engine as it jogs along a winding mountain road with a drop-off that curdles your stomach.
American is humidity that no human should suffer through, and calls it "misery".
American is wild bison alive and roaming and chasing down wolves that emerge without warning.
American is pie.
American is the wrong spelling of "football".
American is our spelling of "football".
American is such a complex language that no one knows how to pronounce it anywhere.
American is brownwhiteredgreenblueorangeblacktanand the color of the sky when the sun is blazing down.
American is watching the planets and stares at night with a telescope you don't understand.
American is red, white, and blue on a pole and calling it honor.
American is good-bye.
American is hello.
American is free will.
American is freedom.
American is the power to change our minds.
American is not the power to change your minds.
American is not the underground black of a tunnel with no light.
American is a grid of lights from space like fireflies resting on the earth.

American

is
us.

All images were taken by me, on my phone. I love doing works like this because I like to explain what American is based on our country's history. God Bless!
